An Indian Perspective

In its second year, the Voiceless Animal Law Lecture Series saw Raj Panjwani, India’s leading animal advocate, speak at seven leading law schools across Australia and New Zealand. The inaugural lecture, at the University of New South Wales, included a panel discussion by some important voices in the animal protection movement including: Professor David Weisbrot AM (President of the Australian Law Reform Commission); Dr Siobhan O’Sullivan (Specialist in Animal Welfare Public Policy based at the University of Melbourne); and Tara Ward (Lecturer in Animal Law at UNSW).

Mr Panjwani’s lecture, which focused on the animal laws of India as well as some interesting cases Mr Panjwani has litigated, drew strong crowds across the country and generated much discussion. The positive response from legal professionals, the general public and the media confirms that the animal law movement is fast gathering momentum.
