Voiceless Legal Advisory Council (LAC) is a collection of Australian animal law experts who collaborate with Voiceless to provide their legal expertise and commentary on animal law education materials and initiatives.

Ruth Hatten

Ruth Hatten was admitted to practice as a lawyer in 2003. She has worked for top-tier, mid-tier and boutique firms, government and in-house in Australia and the United Kingdom. Ruth is currently engaged as a consultant for Brisbane animal law firm, The Animal Lawyer, and as a Senior Associate for Aitchison Reid Building & Construction Lawyers.

An animal advocate since the age of 11, Ruth is passionate about all things animal. She has been involved in the animal law movement since 2007. Between 2010 and 2013, Ruth was legal counsel for Voiceless, the animal protection institute. She has published articles and papers on a range of animal law topics and has presented on animal law at law firms, universities and conferences in Australia and New Zealand. Ruth contributed a chapter to the second edition of Animal Law in Australasia: Continuing the Dialogue (Federation Press, 2nd Ed., 2013) titled ‘International Dimensions of Animal Cruelty Law’, which focuses upon critical animal issues with an international dimension, namely, live export and whaling.

Ruth is an Associate Academic for the Centre for Compassionate Conservation, University of Technology Sydney. She has previously been a board member of Minding Animals International, a member of the Australian Animal Protection Law Journal, and has held various roles at the Barristers Animal Welfare Panel including National Coordinator and Intensive Animal Agriculture Welfare Law & Policy Advisor. Ruth is often called on to speak at animal rights rallies and events. Ruth also lectures on animal law as part of the veterinary bioscience degree at the University of Queensland.

Outside of the law, Ruth operates an innovative animal naturopathy business, Sahaja Animal Healing, and a plant based coaching business, The Whole Plant Living Co. She shares her home with cats Lilly, Max and Elvy, and rescue greyhound, Louie.
