Janet Laurence

Best known for her environmental artworks and the Australian War Memorial in Hyde Park London (created in collaboration with TZG architects), multi-talented and award winning artist Janet Laurence is an active member of the Voiceless community.

Janet has forged a successful local and international career as one of Australia’s most prolific artists. After studies in Sydney, Perugia Italy and New York, Janet was awarded a Rockefeller Churchill Fellowship and Australia Council Fellowships. She is currently a Visiting Fellow for COFA University of NSW.

Janet’s work appears in both public and private collections throughout the world. Locally, Janet has a permanent presence at Museum of Sydney (Edge of the Trees), Sydney 2000 Olympic site, CH2 Building for the Melbourne City Council, Windows for the Central Synagogue, Sculpture Walk in Sydney’s Domain, Government Buildings in Canberra, and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Australian War Memorial, to name but a few. In March 2012 her exhibition ‘After Eden’ appeared at Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation.

Internationally, some of Janet’s public work appears at Changi Airport, Olympic Museum in Switzerland and the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial in Japan.

Amidst developing her career as an artist, Janet does not rest on her successes and continually seeks to expand her knowledge and skills. She completed a Master of Fine Art through the University of New South Wales in 1993 and aims to soon complete her PhD in Ephemeral Architecture through RMIT Melbourne.

Janet is renowned for weaving art, science, architecture, imagination and memory, using layers to draw the viewer into an appreciation of nature, its fragility, and our role in the world. Her passionate views are not only expressed in her work but in her commitment to these philosophies through her staunch undertaking as a supporter of Voiceless.
