PROFESSOR NICK JAMES
Professor Nick James is the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law at Bond University. He is a former commercial lawyer, and has been an academic since 1996. His areas of teaching expertise include business and commercial law, ‘law in society’ and legal theory, company law, the law of succession and property law. He has won numerous awards for his teaching including a National Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning, and he is the author of three textbooks – Business Law, Critical Legal Thinking and The New Lawyer. He has taught animal law to first year law students since 2008, and recently conducted a workshop on best practices in animal law education at the UTAS Animal Law Conference 2013.
Nick has written numerous journal articles and conference papers in the areas of legal education, critical thinking and critical legal theory. He has in the past served as Director of Teaching and Learning and Director of Marketing and External Relations in the law school at the University of Queensland (UQ), Secretary of the UQ Law Graduates Association, Vice-President of the Queensland Law Reform Association, and Director and Chair of Brisbane Boarders Ltd. Nick is presently the Editor-in-Chief of the Legal Education Review.
Nick will present his talk ‘Why some care a lot, some care a little and some don’t care at all: competing ethical frameworks in animal welfare debates’ at the Gold Coast Law Lecture Series on Monday 13 May at Bond University. His presentation will discuss the origins of contemporary debates about animal welfare and animal rights in divergent views about the moral status of animals.
